Immix Partners With Techevolution to Provide UL 827A Compliance

Immix, a global provider of commercial central station and remote SOC software for managed video and security services, has partnered with Techevolution, a technology hosting solutions and managed IT services provider based in Lynn., Mass., which will allow Immix central station and security operations center (SOC) customers to monitor and manage sites and facilities that fall under Underwriters Labs’ 827A standard for security and life safety applications. Techevolution is the first public access data center to have this certification, according to UL.

“The ability for us to have a customer that’s choosing to host their Immix platform to work with a data center that not only understands the sophistication and value of UL827A and achieve the UL litmus test to get certified, is important to us and to the industry,” said Immix CEO Chris Brown.

UL 827A permits existing UL-listed centers, hosted by Techevolution, to earn the additional UL 827A listing. This addition provides the guidance for a UL 827A-listed central station to offer alternative methods related to the structure, location, and implementation of their software and/or hardware, including new options on the hosting placement and the location of their servers, software, central station receivers, and telephone systems.

Any dealer or integrator monitored by a central station hosting Immix architecture at Techevolution is eligible to monitor facilities that fall under UL 827A security regulations, allowing them certified capabilities without having to invest in the process or hold any specific certification themselves.

“In an industry with requirements as stringent as those of the security and life safety industry, Immix is very pleased to be able to offer our customers a choice in how they deploy their infrastructure and operations,” Brown said. “Our UL partner stations can now choose to partner with a data center in North America that is 827A compliant, thus eliminating the need to possibly have to partner with a competitor center or spend a great deal of expense and resources to stand up their own environment.”

UL 827 A

Under 827A, monitoring centers using Immix can choose to adopt a central station host structure through Techevolution to include hosting automation systems, telephone systems, and even receivers in a remote location. A hosting service can relieve some of the burden from the central station, alleviating the need for IT staff experts or incurred costs of routine hardware and software licensing and upgrades. Outsourcing allows the central station to focus its resources on service delivery to its customers.

“We’ve been in the data center business for a while, including serving folks in the alarm industry, and thought this would be a unique offering that would work well for us and our clients,” said Corey Tapper, founder and president of Techevolution. “At first, we didn’t fathom the importance of this in the industry for people who need that level of certification. … It’s a big honor to have that in our data center and offer it to anybody.”

Brown added that Techevolution’s engineering team is thoroughly familiar with the Immix platform, which means they can provide customers with sophisticated support when needed. The Immix-Techevolution partnership fills a gap for central stations that eclipse the UL-mandated monitoring equivalent weight (MEW) factor. Central stations with a certain alarm activity factor that are mandated to maintain fully redundant operations can now choose to partner with a UL 827A-listed hosting provider.

Currently, there are about 26 customers running the Techevolution platform, making them automatically 827A certified, Brown says. Techevolution saw substantial growth during the COVID-19 pandemic for both alarm and non-alarm-centric clients, as the ability to work remotely and house equipment grew, Tapper says.

Customer interest has been high, Brown added. “I think we’re just at the beginning of the hockey stick [for growth]. Every one of our clients that has known has asked how to adjunct that certification into their business,” he added. “One customer just cancelled a $20,000 generator because he will be fully compliant.”

Illumio Inc. announced a managed service provider (MSP) program designed to help small and medium-sized businesses (SMB) reduce the risk of ransomware attacks and other breaches. Illumio is launching the program with multiple MSP partners, including FusionTek and Straight Edge Technology.

Ransomware attacks are one of the greatest threats facing SMBs today. According to a May 2021 warning from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, 50 to 70 percent of ransomware attacks are aimed at SMBs, and smaller organizations struggle to resume regular business operations afterward. MSPs are a trusted advisor to SMBs, providing security without the overhead of self-management. By adding zero trust segmentation from Illumio, MSPs are better prepared to help their customers stop breaches and ransomware from spreading into cyber disasters.
